Authentic Thai Food!

Foodies: Jer, Elayne, Heda, JC, Pearlene, Edd, Adr & Nick
Place: Beer Thai House @ Golden Mile Complex Level 1
Cuisine: Authentic Thai
Date & Time: Saturday, 30th May 2009, 1830 hrs
Rating: 8/10
Return To Eat: Definitely! Great authentic food without spending exorbitantly. Definitely beats going to Thai Express or any authentic thai-wannabe eateries.

Ambiance: 6.5/10
Located right in the heart of Little Thailand that is Golden Mile Complex. The overwhelming scent of lemongrass and spice filled the air, which makes us feel like we are really in Thailand. Not the cleanest place but it's as authentic as they come.

Service: 7/10
As service goes, the waitress taking our order was accommodating and spoke Mandarin, therefore, made it so much easier. The Thais never fail to bring service with a smile, and we got just that, typical Thai hospitality.
Heda, our tour guide for the day, ordering in Thai.

Eddie and JC awaiting the food. Look at the eagerness in Edd's expression. He misses his authentic thai home-cooked food!

Food: 8.5/10

Dish on the left: Stir-fried beef with bamboo shoots, beans and baby kai-lan - Curiously, most of us thought we were eating pork instead of beef! Still a good dish with nice veges.
Dish on the right: Braised pork leg with hard-boiled egg - Kind of a thai version of a "ter-kar". Tender meat with a subtle taste. Heda claims this is better than any Chinese styled ter-kar! I personally felt it was good, but not as good as Outram Ya Hua's ter-kar! Haha

Dish on the extreme right: Stir-fried baby kai-lan with roasted pork - I'm personally not a big fan of roasted pork so I'm just enjoying the baby kai-lan and it was good, the sauce was nice, but beware! There are tiny chilies littered over the dish and it would give your tongue a good lashing if you are not careful enough!

What's thai food without Tom Yum Soup rite? Heda claims we must have the clear one with prawns for authenticity! And my did we enjoy this! Might be a tad too spicy for some but it was tasty and something in the soup was different from the ones I've had previously, like a spice that was lacking in the others? Well, only the chef would be able to help me out on this.

Green mango salad - Nothing that I haven't had before. Fresh ingredients with a good spicy kick! Not for the faint-hearted for sure!

The highlight of the night! Yummy green curry with thai brinjals and chicken. The green curry was creamy and tasted lovely! Somehow, the green curry also tasted abit differently from the ones I've had, another mystery ingredient? This dish was so yummy, Edd was slurping down the curry by itself!

Thankfully we had cups of Thai Iced Tea to soothe our tongues which were on fire from the tom yum soup and the green mango salad! The black drink directly under Edd's arm is "Orh-Liang", which is like a milk-less "Yuan-Yang", a mix of coffee and tea, it was quite good to be honest if you're a coffee-drinker that is.

Nothing special here, just your decent, run-of-the-mill mango sticky rice, which I think they didn't serve it there, but from the neighbouring stalls/eateries. Points added for making the effort in getting our dish. :)

Adr and Nick arrived late and had to settle for leftover Green Mango Salad and Phad Thai! How the Phad Thai went, only they will know. Well guys, all I can say, don't be late next time!

Verdict: Though we aren't experts in authentic thai cuisine, some of the dishes really stood out and it gave us a great home-cooked meal. Nothing fancy, just simple, tasty authentic thai dishes which burnt our tongues, yet left us hanging for more. Golden Mile Complex might not be the best palce for shopping or just to drop by, but it surely deserves a visit once in awhile to Beer Thai House for some great food.

After a sumptious meal (and even though JC didn't get his Stuffed Chicken Wings), we strolled through the Thai supermarket located at the 2nd floor and we were wowed by the unique Thai produce like Mama Instant Noodles, Freeze-Dried Durian Crackers and all sorts of Thai goodies! Such an eye-opener for some of us! It was just like being in Thailand all over again.

Finally, we dropped by Thai Disco 2(which was on the 1st floor, and Thai Disco 1 was on Level 2??) for a drink or 2 and to catch the Live performances. It helped that they telecasted the FA Cup Final as well to keep us entertained during the intermissions. The pop/hip-hop performances performed by the resident performers there were enjoyable and amusing at times. It was nothing new to me as Dickson brought us to Geographer Bar before and they had some of the girls gyrating on stage, hoping to score flower garlands which in turn will help them gain commission.

Nothing sleazy at this place, alot of young Thais coming together and having a good time, albeit in a small discoteque. We had a great time watching the performances/FA cup match/topless guy clearly high on E, all thanks to our 'tour guide' Heda! Cheers to him! We would'nt have a clue what to do without him! :)
